The Dramatic Style — Root Dogma and Correction

Root dogma: Being seen, admired, and the center of emotional attention is a genuine good; invisibility is a genuine evil.

Both halves are false. This page states the propositions the style holds, and then the route by which each is corrected.

What This Page Is

An entry from the Character Dogma Register, which converts the characteristic needs of each personality style into propositions of the form “X is a genuine good” or “Y is a genuine evil.” The propositions below are false beliefs. They are set out so that a man can find his own among them and see what corrects it.

The style descriptions derive from John M. Oldham and Lois B. Morris, The New Personality Self-Portrait (New York: Bantam, 1995), by way of the PTypes typology. The conversion into dogma-statements, and the correction, are the work of the corpus and not of Oldham.

A Style Is Not a Cause of Assent

A personality style is a habituated pattern of judgment. It is not a cause of the judgment and does not explain why any particular assent was given. The agent originates his assent; nothing here qualifies that.

The register is diagnostic and not exculpatory. A style narrows the search for a man’s false value judgments. It never supplies an excuse for one, and it never predicts what he will assent to next. Read as an account of what a man could not help holding, this page asserts the contradictory of the commitment the corpus is built on.

The Judgments

  • Others’ indifference toward one is a genuine evil.
  • Emotional flatness in others is a genuine evil.
  • Analytical reasoning as a substitute for emotional knowing is a genuine evil.
  • Emotional reactiveness to events is a genuine good.
  • Romance and melodrama are genuine goods.
  • Being seen, noticed, and the center of attention are genuine goods.
  • Attention to appearance and sexual attractiveness are genuine goods.
  • Knowing the world through one’s emotions is a genuine good.
  • Passion extracted from every experience is a genuine good.
  • Theatrical transformation of ordinary events is a genuine good.
  • Free and powerful emotional display is a genuine good.
  • Emotional experience is a genuine good; details, routines, planning, and finances are genuine evils.
  • Intense living and plumbing emotional heights and depths are genuine goods.
  • Boredom is a genuine evil.
  • Stirring others’ passions is a genuine good.
  • Being the life of the party and drawing people toward oneself are genuine goods.
  • Pleasing others and attending to their desires are genuine goods.
  • Others’ admiration and desire are genuine goods.
  • A high degree of excitement in relationships is a genuine good.
  • A stimulating social life populated with interesting people is a genuine good.
  • Partners’ admiration, attention, and expression of feeling are genuine goods.
  • Mundane chores are genuine evils.
  • Repressing unpleasantness to sustain optimism is a genuine good.
  • Being alone is a genuine evil.
  • Others’ perception as one’s primary self-definition is a genuine good.
  • An appealing and attractive image is a genuine good.
  • Others’ reassurance and feedback are genuine goods.
  • Immediate gratification and impulsive reaction are genuine goods.
  • Believing in happy endings and ignoring unpleasant reality are genuine goods.
  • Exciting, impactful work is a genuine good; routine and technical work are genuine evils.
  • Operating on hunches rather than reasoning is a genuine good.

The list is not expected to be consistent. These are types of bad character, and internal contradiction within a style is diagnostic of it rather than an error in the conversion.

The Correction

Other people’s attention is external. It is produced in their minds, given and withdrawn on their own occasions, and no act of will reaches it. Good and evil extend to virtue and vice and no further, so being noticed and being overlooked are alike neither.

This style has a second and less obvious error stacked on the first, and it is the one that makes the pattern self-sustaining. The cluster holds emotional experience itself to be a good — intensity, passion, plumbing the heights and depths. But emotions are not raw events that happen to a man. They are the products of his judgments about what is good and what is evil. A strong feeling is the downstream consequence of a strong valuation, so a man who prizes intense feeling is prizing the output of his own misclassification and has made the error into a supply.

That is why the correction cannot be delivered as advice to feel less. Nothing is corrected by suppression. What changes the feeling is changing the judgment beneath it, and the feeling then follows without being managed at all.

What Survives the Correction

Warmth survives. So does the capacity to move other people, to make an occasion out of an ordinary evening, to be good company. None of that depended on the dogma, and the corpus asks for none of it to be given up.

Attending to others, pleasing them, drawing them out — these are appropriate aims, and where duty places a man among people they are what duty looks like. What is removed is the valuation: that his condition rides on whether they turn toward him.

The plainest test is what happens when the room does not respond. The warmth that survives correction is unchanged by that. The warmth that depends on the dogma curdles, and the curdling is the evidence that a good was thought to be at stake.

The Near Miss

“Knowing the world through one’s emotions is a genuine good,” taken with “Operating on hunches rather than reasoning,” is the item on this page that touches the corpus most directly — not as a resemblance but as a contradiction, and it is worth being clear which.

An impression is propositional. It arrives asserting something about the world, and it is true or false according to whether the world is that way. The work is to examine the assertion and then to assent or withhold. A feeling is what follows once assent has been given; it is downstream, and it reports on the judgment already made rather than on the world.

Treating feeling as a mode of apprehension therefore inverts the order. It takes the output of a judgment for evidence about the thing judged, which makes every strong feeling self-confirming and puts the whole of the style’s valuation beyond correction. This is the one item on the page that must be surrendered before any of the rest can be examined.
